Good News: Soccer Team Wants Phoenix Greyhound Park

Good News: Soccer Team Wants Phoenix Greyhound Park

What a brilliant idea. According to this article, “The Monsoon are attempting to work with the city of Phoenix on revitalizing an abandoned greyhound racing facility into a suitable soccer stadium.” (It’s the Pacific Monsoon Soccer team or what I like to refer to them as PMS.)  Wouldn’t it be grand if PMS trumps PGP? Yowza! No more greyhounds become sick, lame, injured or die.

Further in the article, it says, “There is another group, Phoenix Pro Soccer, also looking to secure a Divsion 2 franchise for the Phoenix area.”

Bright idea: Why doesn’t the Phoenix Pro Soccer team or another soccer team negotiate with the dog track in South Tucson? Its popularity continues to wane as does its patrons. Through the years, Tucsonans are grown hip to greyhound racing cruelty.

Last year during a fire in the historic tower, there were less patrons than employees on the premises (no dogs or people were injured thankfully). And the fire damage has not been fixed yet. Does South Tucson let other businesses with fire damage continue to be open? What are they waiting for?

Perhaps a soccer team?

It would be good business for the community and family entertainment. Watching dogs race and break their legs and run into the rail is not family entertainment; that’s child abuse AND animal abuse.

Partial list of injured Arizona racing greyhounds

Partial list of Arizona greyhound racing injuries first week of June 2008.

June 1 – four injuries in one night at Phoenix Greyhound Park
Bella Alexandria – lame, info not provided, raced until Oct 2009 (34 races), what happened to this dog?   (owner: David Blair)
Bella Ionic – lame, info not provided, career-ending injury, MIA  (owner: David Blair)  This brindle female was the 2006 Tucson Night of Stars XVIII champ – BFD! Bella Ionic won 11 straight wins on 9/29/06, 10/4/06, 10/7/06, 10/13/06, 10/17/06, 10/21/06, 10/25/06, 10/30/06, 11/2/06, 11/11/06, and 11/16/06. On 10/25 the description says, “Just lsted, rail” – what the hell does that mean? Poor Bella Ionic, she raced 78 times. What happened to her?
Cedaran Camry – lame, info not provided, raced until 6/09, adopted through Ariz-Adopt-a-Greyhound rescue group

Savvy Single – lame, info not provided, almost 2 years after this injury- Savvy Single raced on May 27 at Tucson Greyhound Park.  (owner: Gregory Wood)

June 4- Tucson Greyhound  Park
Guan Jun – red male fawn, fracture, right tibia, EUTHANIZED (owner: Ten Anderson)  Why are dogs euthanized? What’s wrong with dog racing? Why do greyhounds have to die? Would people stand for pugs to die this cruel way?

June 7 – Phoenix Greyhound Park
Miss Big Bucks – fracture, left leg, EUTHANIZED (owner: Russ McIhenny)  according to greyhound-data the the last date was March 22, 2008 – Wrong! Who can trust this site when it’s wrong? What else is wrong with the racing industry?

Wildberry Luigid – fracture, right toes, career-ending, MIA  (owner: Geo. Petropoulos)
This is frightening as the dog fell 2x – once on Feb 7 2008 and March 5 2008 but according to the injury report he was still running on June 7. Where is this hound?

You can search Greyhound-Data by entering the racing name of the dog and the country of origin. The information is not always up to date even though it’s a racing industry website.

Does “not provided” mean that no treatment was provided?

What happened to these four racing dogs?

Why were four dogs injured in one night on Feb. 17, 2008 — two years ago today?

Thank DOG Phoenix Greyhound Park is closed and will remain closed. One less dog track in Arizona means less injured dogs, less race dogs euthanized, less breeding unless Ariz. Department of Racing continues to stupidly encourage the breeding of greyhounds and then give the breeders generous breeding awards for unwanted greyhounds.

Your tax dollars at work.

Greyhound racing injuries, steroids in Arizona

Happy Valentine’s Day but not for these Arizona racing greyhounds.

Two years ago today – 2/14/08 – Anton Ego was injured at Phoenix Greyhound Park. This was the first of three racing injuries in 2008 for Anton Ego. During his racing career he ran 19 races, winning 4. He won his last race on Jan. 26, 2008, but continued to race and become further injured.

On Valentine’s Day 2008, his

  • injury type – lame
  • injury location – not provided
  • treatment – not provided (does this mean treatment was not provided?)
  • recovery time – not provided (was no recovery time provided?)

What happened to Anton Ego? Did he get adopted? Did he get euthanized?

—————————–

Also on Valentine’s Day 2008 at Phoenix Greyhound Park, BC She’s a Jewel suffered:

  • injury type – fracture
  • injury location – tail (ouch!)
  • treatment – not provided (does this mean treatment was not provided?)
  • recovery time – not provided (was no recovery time provided?)

From the Suspension List – what does that mean? Please email savetucsongreyhounds@gmail.com to explain that term confidentially.

BC She’s a Jewel is still racing, as a matter of fact raced last night at Tucson Greyhound Park in the 17th race.

As of this website, BC She’s a Jewel has raced 116 times but this website ends December 2009. The dog is still racing.

We have to wonder how many times she has been injected with anabolic steroids to suppress estrus/heat. Human athletes take steroids to become more powerful and build more muscle.

According to the National Institutes of Health:

Characterization of urinary metabolites of testosterone, methyltestosterone, mibolerone and boldebone in greyhound dogs.

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Connecticut, Storrs 06269, USA.

Androgenic steroids are used in female greyhound dogs to prevent the onset of estrus; moreover, these steroids also have potent anabolic activity. As anabolic steroids increase muscle mass and aggression in animals, the excessive use of these agents in racing greyhounds gives an UNFAIR PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGE TO TREATED DOGS.

The use of repeated anabolic steroids dosing to Arizona racing greyhounds should be banned because it harms the dogs with long-term dosing and compromises the integrity of greyhound racing wagering.

Please contact your legislators and urge them to vote YES for  AZ HB 2637.

Greyhound Racing Injuries – Arizona

On Feb. 2, 2008 Bayou Juliet fractured her right ankle. If treatment was provided, none is listed. Fortunately, for Bayou Juliet it was a career ending injury and she went on to be rehomed by GPA-Utah.

You may recall she was injured on Jan. 23 with an abrasion to the ear. According to this website she raced 54 times starting in Phoenix and ended up in Tucson. Her racing enslavement lasted from from Apr 24, 2006 through Feb. 2, 2008.

Also on Feb. 2, 2008 CL(S) Magic Power fractured a right toe, what if any treatment is not provided, duration of recovery is 1 to 2 months and the comments was “May be done”. But maybe not, because according to this website, CL raced three more times, twice in May and once in June 2008. All total he raced 85 times, winning a dozen times. This handsome boy was rehomed by Racing Home Greyhounds.

Greyhound Racing Injuries – Arizona

Two years ago today – Jan. 26, 2008, two dogs were reported injured at Phoenix Greyhound Park.

UCME Just Lookin suffered a fracture of the right hock. The hock was wrapped and splinted. Recovery time not provided. According to greyhound-data, this dog ran 84 races from Jan 7, 2007 through Jan. 26, 2008 and came in first place 7 times.

  • What happened to this 60-pound red & white female?
  • How many times was she dosed with anabolic steroids to suppress estrus?

Also at Phoenix Greyhound Park, for RD’s Shaggy something happened to the dog’s rear legs but exactly what is not provided. Also not provided is the treatment or how long the recovery time would be. Comments included   “fell 1st turn – carried off track – both rear legs had a stilted walk, no fracture”

According to greyhound-data, he raced 58 times and continued to race until March 8, 2008 where he came in 2nd place but there was no comment and no mention of RD’s Shaggy on the injury list on that date.

  • Did this hound continue to run or did he retire?
  • What happened to RD’s Shaggy?
  • Who is RD?

Greyhound Racing Injury – Jan. 20, 2008

One year ago on Jan. 20, 2008 at Phoenix Greyhound Park, the greyhound Mullroy was injured with a rupture to the left carpus. The treatment provided was a bandaid and Rimadyl.

The comment on the Arizona Department of Racing (ADOR) injury report was “dog hit fence” and “lots of blood.”

If this is your dog or if you were there or you saw it happen, please contact: savetucsongreyhounds@gmail.com for a confidential conversation.

You can view the injury report here.

Isolated fractures of the bones of the carpus (wrist) or tarsus (ankle) are not frequently encountered in veterinary medicine with the exception of racing greyhounds.

In greyhounds, the fractures of the individual bones in the carpus or tarsus occur as a result of the enormous stresses involved in running around a racetrack at high speeds.

These fractures are usually the result of trauma and often cause a severe lameness of the affected limb. The lameness may improve with time and rest.

R.I.P. AZ Racing Greyhounds – Jan. 2008

On the 2008 greyhound racing injury report, I noticed two dogs that died in January and never got to know the comfort of a forever home. These greyhounds died racing to their death.

Let’s remember them now:

At the Phoenix Greyhound Park on Jan. 9, 2008, racing greyhound RUMBLE suffered a right radius fracture and ulna. The treatment was euthanasia or PTD (put to death).

As with all fractures, fractures of the radius and ulna can also be classified as “simple” if each bone breaks into two pieces or “comminuted” if there are multiple pieces. Please see this website for additional reference.

On Jan. 15, 2008 at Tucson Greyhound Park, TNJ KAYKAY was euthanized. The report gives no information as to what kind of injury this dog suffered or where on the body the injury was. Information not provided.

TNJ KAYKAY ran 43 races in almost a year before she died. She missed her 3rd birthday by a month. Did somebody get rich of this dog?

If you can remember why TNJ KAYKAY died and want to talk about it, please contact savetucsongreyhounds@gmail.com

You too can look at your very own injury report which is available by contacting (ADOR) Arizona Department of Racing and completing a FOIA request.

Phoenix Greyhound Racing Ends – Good News!

Tonight – December 19, 2009 is the last night of live greyhound racing at Phoenix Greyhound Park. Hooray!

Good riddance to 55 years of greyhound abuse and death.

Never forget about one of the incidents when 124 greyhounds were found dead in Chandler Heights with ears cut off so their tattoos were not visible and ownership or blame couldn’t be pointed. That’s all part of the proud and glorious history of Phoenix Greyhound Park.

Tonight for the last 18 last races,  18 dogs from the 2008 Arizona injury list are still racing. Four of the 18 dogs have been injured twice in 2008 and yet continue to race through the end of 2009. I hope to high hell that none of these dogs (18 races x 8 dogs per dogs) are injured so badly that they have to be euthanized tonight.

What’s going to happen to the Phoenix dogs?

Some are going to race elsewhere probably Tucson Greyhound Park and tracks in the Southeast. Some dogs will be adopted. Some will go back to the farm, however, ambiguous that might be. No one in Phoenix has come forward to talk about the disposition of these dogs. Don’t ask. Don’t tell.

We’ll be curious if the Arizona Department of Racing will  continue to encourage and promote the breeding of greyhounds when there’s only one low level track — Tucson.  If ADOR continues to do so, they have no common sense, so much for government regulation.

Oh, and in a state that’s so bankrupt, in 2009, according to the audit report for the Department of Racing, the state of Arizona gave $223,112 in breeding awards to 612 dogs. The money goes to 6% of the breeders.
