Greyhound Racing in Arizona: 4 fractured limbs in one night, Tucson

What the hell was going on at the South Tucson dog track on June 19, 2008 and June 20, 2008? Four dogs fractured body parts; three fractured ankles and one dog fractured a hock.  One had dropped shoulder and the sixth injury is conveniently vague. You can view the injury report here. The injury report is compiled from public records requested from the Arizona Department of Racing.

June 19, 2008
BOC’s Lil Boy
fracture, left hock
Notes: Est Recovery Time: “4-6 months or never” “I am seeing a lot of injury on far turn”
They tried to race him again on 6/24 but he wouldn’t run:  “no runner”
Lil Boy knew enough not to run. Career ending.
Owner: D. Sperry – Mr. Sperry: What happened to this little boy dog who raced 28 times?

RLM’s Elvira
fracture, right ankle
Went on to race until August 9, 2008  – Why continue to race a dog with a fractured ankle?
Adopted through GPA-AZ

RLM’s Majestic
dropped muscle, right shoulder
Tried to race him again on June 24, 2008  – “no runner”
Tried to race him again on Feb. 26, 2009
Tried to race him again on April 7, 2009 – He raced 25 times and won 11 times which is probably why they wanted him to run, run, run. From the photo on Greyhound-Data, it looks like Majestic went to a forever home but it’s not listed.

June 20, 2008

CL Code Red
fracture, right ankle
Career-ending
Greyhound-Data shows him racing only 3 races in Dec 2007 but here he is racing in June 08. Record keeping mishaps? Wow if the racing industry can’t manage their own record keeping, how do they expect us to believe that big number that they say gets adopted?
Adopted through Racing Home Greyhounds

Hollywood Shy
fracture right ankle
Career-ending
Greyhound-Data has her last race as April 2, 2008;  she ran a total of 128 races but here she is racing in June 2008.  More record keeping mishaps?
Adopted through Arizona Greyhound Rescue

RLM’s Bree
not provided, left foot, tendon
Career-ending, MIA, this poor girl raced 130 times if indeed the records are correct. What happened to Bree? The question is directed to RLM’s Greyhounds (owner).

The common thread here is  treatment “not provided” in each case. If it was provided, we’re the dark. Nobody at the state regulation level obviously cares if treatment was provided or not. There is a space on the form but it’s rarely filled in. Welcome to the world of lack of greyhound racing accountability.

All that bad news came from Tucson Greyhound Park.

but…

at Phoenix Greyhound Park on June 22, 2008…a dog fractured his or her right hock. No other information was provided. Nobody cared enough to enter the dog’s name. Nobody — not its owner, trainer, or track vet cared enough to enter the dog’s name.  Just another flagrant example of how disposable these dogs are to the dog racing industry and how unaccountable the system is and how unregulated the sport runs by the state of Arizona.

You can look up dogs to some degree by going to Greyhound-Data and entering the dog’s name and land of origin and gender if you know it.

Greyhound Racing-Owner Requested Euthanasia in Tucson

Two years ago today – June 13, 2008 – at Tucson Greyhound Park, four greyhounds were injured while racing, including one that was euthanized.

CL Noble Love bruised her right toe. If any treatment was provided, it’s not mentioned but the treatment recommended was 10-14 days off. Fortunately, Ms. Love has been adopted through Arizona Greyhound Rescue.

M’s Alice fractured her right ankle – If treatment was given, none listed. A comment was provided:  “Track surface needs more attention”   M’s Alice was adopted through Racing Home Greyhound. Greyhound-Data says no races for this dog but she raced on this day and fractured her right ankle. So much for the validity of industry records.

Phoenix Gunsmoke bruised his right toe. If there was any treatment, none is listed. It was recommended PG be off his feet for two weeks.  The comment area says: “Rocks, I think – his was cut and bruised”  PG went on to race and raced 150 times in his career. (poor dog). He was adopted through Racing Home Greyhounds.

With A Bang fractured his right hock. The treatment was euthanasia. With a Bang is just another racing statistic put to death for a common treatable injury. This poor hound never knew the kindness of an adopter’s soft bed. He raced 47 times, winning 10 races. The owner is George Fune.

Herein lies one of many problems associated with greyhound racing: “Owner requested euthanasia”

According to the Arizona Department of Racing regulations, he did what he is supposed to do. State regulation R19-2-329 states: “Every effort shall be made to adopt greyhounds not used for racing or breeding.” It’s the “every effort” part that kennel owners use as a free pass. When filling out paperwork, they may use the loophole by saying they tried to contact someone, but were unsuccessful.  Mr. Fune, who did you try to contact?

A few years ago another greyhound was euthanized even though two adoption groups were on their way to save the hound and a third group was already on the premises. It was confusing because the president of the group on the premises was/is also the track manager.

Two years ago tomorrow – June 14, 2008 – at Tucson Greyhound Park

BC Flashy Rocky suffered an abrasion on the “left neck” No other information was provided except “Recommend putting dog on antibiotics”  Check out Rocky’s photo, what ears!  Rocky continued to race a few more months; he raced 125 times and was adopted through GreySave in Southern Calif. I hope he’s a much loved couch potato.

Partial list of injured Arizona racing greyhounds

Partial list of Arizona greyhound racing injuries first week of June 2008.

June 1 – four injuries in one night at Phoenix Greyhound Park
Bella Alexandria – lame, info not provided, raced until Oct 2009 (34 races), what happened to this dog?   (owner: David Blair)
Bella Ionic – lame, info not provided, career-ending injury, MIA  (owner: David Blair)  This brindle female was the 2006 Tucson Night of Stars XVIII champ – BFD! Bella Ionic won 11 straight wins on 9/29/06, 10/4/06, 10/7/06, 10/13/06, 10/17/06, 10/21/06, 10/25/06, 10/30/06, 11/2/06, 11/11/06, and 11/16/06. On 10/25 the description says, “Just lsted, rail” – what the hell does that mean? Poor Bella Ionic, she raced 78 times. What happened to her?
Cedaran Camry – lame, info not provided, raced until 6/09, adopted through Ariz-Adopt-a-Greyhound rescue group

Savvy Single – lame, info not provided, almost 2 years after this injury- Savvy Single raced on May 27 at Tucson Greyhound Park.  (owner: Gregory Wood)

June 4- Tucson Greyhound  Park
Guan Jun – red male fawn, fracture, right tibia, EUTHANIZED (owner: Ten Anderson)  Why are dogs euthanized? What’s wrong with dog racing? Why do greyhounds have to die? Would people stand for pugs to die this cruel way?

June 7 – Phoenix Greyhound Park
Miss Big Bucks – fracture, left leg, EUTHANIZED (owner: Russ McIhenny)  according to greyhound-data the the last date was March 22, 2008 – Wrong! Who can trust this site when it’s wrong? What else is wrong with the racing industry?

Wildberry Luigid – fracture, right toes, career-ending, MIA  (owner: Geo. Petropoulos)
This is frightening as the dog fell 2x – once on Feb 7 2008 and March 5 2008 but according to the injury report he was still running on June 7. Where is this hound?

You can search Greyhound-Data by entering the racing name of the dog and the country of origin. The information is not always up to date even though it’s a racing industry website.

16 AZ greyhounds sick, lame or injured from May 1 to 7

16 AZ greyhounds sick, lame or injured from May 1 through May 7, 2008

5/01/08 – Phoenix – Coldwater Maahs - lame, left leg

Greyhound-Data says the last race was March 7, 2008 which obviously is incorrect because the dog was injured on May 1, 2008 according to the injury report. I don’t know how the racing industry can say 90 percent of their dogs get adopted because they can’t even keep good records of who is racing and when they do or don’t stop. What happened to Coldwater Maahs?

5/01/08 – Phoenix -  DB Another Chance - sick – How? What?

According to Greyhound-Data, DB last raced 12/19/09, the last night of racing at PGP. Is this correct? I seem to have seen his name recently when I was browsing TGP’s racing schedule. How do I remember? I’m a fan of DB Cooper. I’m hoping DB Cooper had another chance too.  So what happened to DB Another Chance?  You Tucson kennel people reading this; email me and let me know. Or if your rescue group saved this dog, please let me know.

5/01/08 – Phoenix - KB’s Hot to Trot – lame, not provided

According to Greyhound-Data her last race was 3/06/08 which is wrong again. This dog kept on racing and was injured on May 1, 2008. Why isn’t Greyhound-Data’s records correct? What happened to this dog?

5/02/08 – Phoenix - BC Billy Boy - lame, right leg

Poor Billy raced 82 times. The greyhound data site has a big space of absence from March 8, 2008 to Feb 23, 2009 and then another absence to July 28, 2009. Billy was obviously racing on May 2, 2008 but greyhound-data has not recorded it. After July 28, 2009 Billy only raced twice. What happened to BC Billy Boy?

5/03/08 - Phoenix - Brenda K – sprain, right hock

Here’s another troubling entry. Brenda K was injured on May 3, 2008. She sprained her right hock but it’s not listed on the Greyhound-Data site. Why not? There is nothing listed from March 2008 to Jan 2009. This poor dog continues to limp along running for her life from Phoenix to Southland to VictoryLand. What happened to Brenda K?

5/03/08 – Phoenix - Gunner – fracture, right ankle,  3 months recovery time

Poor Gunner fractured his right ankle. Raise your hand if you think a fractured right ankle should be a career ending injury. Why would this dog continue to race? According to the injury report he was injured again only three months later – August 6, 2008. A dog with a fractured ankle has 3 months recovery time and then has to run again. This is the problem with greyhound racing. Dogs are used and reused, lame or not. Does the racing industry know the difference between right vs. wrong? Where is Gunner now? Did Gunner finally find a loving forever home or not?

5/03/08 - Phoenix -   Phat Az – something happened to Phat’s left foot

Nobody bothered to complete the injury report info as to the full name; so much for AZ state oversight and regulation; many dogs’ name begin with Phat Az. Nobody cared enough about this dog to completely fill out the injury report.

5/03/08 – Tucson -  Big Epistle -  sprain, left hock, ankle

Lucky for the Big Epistle, this was a career-ending injury and he was adopted through Greyhounds of the Verde Valley.

5/05/08 – Phoenix - Reward Becky -   lame, right foot

Once again the Greyhound-Data lists her last race as 3/06/08 but the injury report knows better. What good is the industry-driven Greyhound Data if it’s frequently wrong? It mirrors the overall racing industry. Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! What happened to Reward Becky?

5/06/08 – Phoenix -   Astar Clayton -   lame, not provided

Greyhound-Data lists last race as 3/07/08. According to the injury report not only was he injured on May 6 but injured again July 24 with a tear in left leg muscle. Did this end his career? Dog, I hope so but who knows how these dogs are used and misused?  What happened to Astar Clayton?

5/06/08 – Phoenix  - CL Gotta Eat – fracture, left hock

Was this a career-ending injury? Hopefully no cruel trainer made CL run again with a fractured left hock. The Greyhound-Data site says CL last raced 11/17/07 in Tucson. Wrong again!  What happened to CL Gotta Eat?

5/06/08 – Phoenix -  Ingenious -   lame, right leg

How many times does a dog have to be injured or reported as lame before the dog is retired? Not only was Ingenious’ right leg lame on May 6 but injured again on October 4, something happened (info not provided) once again the right leg, and then lame again on October 16, same leg.  Greyhound Data lists this greyhound’s last race on June 3, 2009. Is that right? Greyhound Data’s races dates differ from the injury report. What happened to Ingenious?

5/06/08 -  Phoenix  - JP’s Squareshot -  sick, not provided – How was it sick?

Who rescued this dog?

5/06/08 – Phoenix -  Phat Az Carmen -   lame, right leg

Greyhound-Data once again lists Phat Az Carmen’s last race 4/24/08 but her right leg became lame on May 6, 2008. Fortunately, Carmen was adopted through AZ Greyhound Rescue.

5/06/08 – Phoenix -  Queen Victoria -  sprain, right hock

What happened to Queen Victoria?

5/07/08 – Tucson -    Valley Chamo -   tear, right ankle, ligament

This was a career-ending injury. What happened to Valley Chamo?

Thank dog Phoenix Greyhound Park closed and will soon be a soccer field. Two legged athletes may be injured during the game but four legged greyhounds won’t become lame and fracture their hocks and to not be accounted for.

2008 Arizona Greyhound Injury Report at Phoenix Greyhound Park & Tucson Greyhound Park (adobe acrobat required)

greyhound racing: 5 dogs injured in 2 AZ tracks – April 24, 2008

Two years ago today – April 24, 2008, Air Page had a career ending injury. According to Greyhound Data, this dog raced 238 times from May 8, 2004 to April 24, 2008. #*&%! That is a damn crime!

In all these races, she only had 35 wins and  placed second 29 times. Air Page was not a big winner but for whatever unknown reason, nobody would let her stop racing.

According to the Greyhound Data page, comments allude to her struggling in her races since at least January.

The Greyhound Data is so detailed yet nobody or nothing says what happened to this dog.

This is a big problem. Greyhound Data is minutely detailed while the dog is racing but once they stop — POOF! — whereabouts of dogs become unable to track. I don’t know how the pro racing contingent can say that their adoption rate is 90 percent unless they have a secret ledger somewhere that they’re not showing to the skeptical public. How about some transparency?

Did anyone adopt Air Page or did she race until her death?

The night that ended Air Page’s racing career, Phat Az Carmen was the winner. Carmen shows up on the 2008 injury report twice, once  in May as lame and once in July with a pulled muscle. Then what happens?

Almost 2 years later, Carmen gets adopted. What happened to poor Carmen in the interim?

Also on April 24, 2008, two more dogs were injured at Phoenix Greyhound Park and two more dogs at Tucson Greyhound Park. One night, two tracks, five dogs and five injuries. Do the math: It’s five too many.

Greyhound Injury Tucson

Tucson– Two years ago today March 26, 2008 Tough Ol Buzzard suffered a laceration on his right leg. His leg was wrapped and he went on medication. Recovery time was predicted for 10 to 14 days.

According to the data site, he didn’t race again for two months.

Greyhound injury

Tucson –Two years ago today — 03/25/08 — WW Billy The Kid tore his  right ligament. Was treatment provided? Who knows? It’s not listed. It was a career ending injury for poor Billy.

This dog’s info was not found in greyhound data website.

Arizona Greyhound Racing Injury – Pinballed first turn

Two years ago today, March 21, 2008, Scarlet’s Demon fractured his right foot in what was a career ending injury at Tucson Greyhound Park. According to the data report, the dog was pin balled at the first turn. That conjures a terrifying image. The things these poor race dogs endure in order to make a buck for their owners is horrifying.

Scarlet’s Demon raced 67 times in two states and had been injured before. He raced in Colorado which thankfully has no more racing. Can’t wait until TGP joins that club. Dozens and dozens of people across the state, greyhound adopters and people who simply hate greyhound racing cruelty are now joined at the hip and heart to end greyhound racing in Arizona.

What happened to Scarlet’s Demon? His whereabouts are unknown. If you have this handsome red male on your couch, please email me at savetucsongreyhounds@gmail.com

He was injured racing in Colorado in Nov ’06;

didn’t race again until June ’07 in Tucson

Greyhound racing: Blood in urine, check for tick fever

Two years ago today – March 15, 2008, a greyhound was injured at Tucson Greyhound Park.

In this case, RD Ned’s right hock swelled. No treatment was provided on the injury report so we have no way of knowing whether treatment was provided but not listed or wasn’t provided. Also no recovery time was listed although according to the data website, Ned didn’t race for two months but started up again to race 151 times.

In the comments, it was reported (from Veterinarian Injury Report) “Blood in urine – recommend check for tick fever.”

Blood in urine is a scary diagnosis for dog and for man. Why do racing greyhounds suffer so much tick fever?

WWW Kelly Lebrock Greyhound, are you well?

Two years ago today – March 12, 2008

WWW Kelly Lebrock suffered a laceration on her right leg. The leg was sutured and wrap. Recovery time was not noted.

However, according to the data, she continued to race for a total of 82 times until she retired in August 2008. I wonder how many times she was dosed with anabolic steroids?

I hope Kelly Lebrock has not suffered urine scald or bladder infections or osteosarcoma or neurological disorders.
