Tucson greyhound racing updates – February 2011

Here is your monthly roundup somewhat later than usual about the poor, tired, injured dogs running for their lives at Tucson Greyhound Park. Again it’s not a “park” per se because parks are nice places.

Rather than have you link back to the previous months, I’ve just included all the info here and will continue to include it just to demonstrate the insanity of these dogs racing, racing, racing and not winning. You can see how these poor dogs are so ready to retire and are so used up.  They are just kept tethered to this cruel sport so some absentee dog owner can put gas in his or her tank.
There are 6 dogs still racing at TGP that were injured or lame in 2008. This just goes to show that the racing industry and those that are supposed to be monitoring it don’t care about greyhound welfare. This is the Mission Statement of the Arizona Department of Racing:

“To regulate and supervise para-mutuel racing conducted in Arizona in order to protect racing participants and the wagering public.  To regulate and supervise boxing and mixed martial arts events conducted in Arizona to protect all participants in those events.”

How much protecting of racing participants — the greyhounds — are they doing if dogs are still racing who were injured, sick, or lame in 2008?

ADOR’s salary budget is almost a quarter of a million dollars. Time to delete that state agency and roll it into the Department of Gaming. Maybe they will be better about protecting the lives of greyhounds.

Here are the dogs still racing from the 2008 injury report:

One year ago, on 2/06/10 she fell in homestretch; since that date, she’s raced 76 races – all short races. Enough animal abuse already!

Not all the dogs in this list are old but these dogs are tired; these dogs have fallen; these dogs have collided; these dogs have been jammed and faded (their words not mine).  Why must losers continue to race? Why? Why? Why? Because of selfish greed and lack of accountability.

Note: Unless specified, the regular race at TGP is 550 yards. The shorter race is 316 yards. If you have any of these dogs that I’m wondering about, email endtucsongreyhoundracing@yahoo.com and I will update this blog post.

Greyhound racing: heartbreaking VIDEO-W.Va. dog racing fatalities

Greyhound racing: 3,000+ dogs injured at Tri State WVA racetrack

West Virginia–On Jan. 4, 2008, a 1-year-old brindle greyhound named Moving Marla was euthanized after she fell during a race and was then run over by other dogs, breaking her legs in several places.

Is this a sport?

I call it animal cruelty for profit.

More than 3,200 greyhounds have been injured at the Tri-State Racetrack in Cross Lanes, West Virginia. During that time, repeated requests for injury reports have been denied until now. According to newly-obtained state records, at least 3,208 greyhound injuries have been reported at this one track since 2005, and nearly 200 dogs have died. Also, it’s likely that the actual number of injuries is even higher, as the state still refuses to produce several months of records.

Read the article which appeared on the front page of today’s Charleston Daily Mail.

Get educated about greyhound racing in West Virginia or the six other remaining states where the dying “sport” of dog racing still exists.

To the racing industry Moving Marla was just a money making pawn. To me, she missed out on being a beloved pet with a soft bed and one-to-one loving kindness. She didn’t deserve the unfathomable cruelty as to how grizzly her life ended.

You can read more about Marla here and here. Such detailed records provided by the racing industry yet one damn dog track in West Virginia cannot find all its injury records.

How convenient is that?

How telling is that?

P.S. Arizona Department of Racing and Tucson Greyhound Park have passed the buck and ignored repeated requests for 2010 injury reports.

UK: Dog dies while racing, close Owlerton Stadium, end greyhound racing everywhere

Kudos to Greyhound Action, a greyhound protection group in the UK, for protesting outside Owlerton Stadium.

Two year old Royal Raider suffered a serious break to one of her front legs after colliding with several other dogs at the first bend. Royal Raider died the following day, despite veterinary treatment.

In fact, all greyhound tracks are inherently lethal, because their oval shape, with fast straights leading into tight bends, creates a very dangerous environment for dogs to run in, leading to thousands of injuries to greyhounds, many of them serious, occurring every year in Britain…the same can be said in the United States.

An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that ‘at least 20 Greyhounds a day – either puppies which do not make the track, or retired dogs aged three or four – simply disappear, presumed killed’ (in the UK)

If there was an loud uproar every time a dog died in the United States, our tracks would be long boarded up and made into shopping centers.

Every time a racing greyhounds dies at a U.S. track it should be on the front page of the sports section.

Also dead racing greyhounds should be announced on the TODAY show. Every racing dog that dies should be announced just like that old dude Wilbur announces all the folks who turn 100.

Maybe if the public knew how often this poor race dogs died here in the U.S. and abroad, it would be the end of this dying sport.

Michael Vick’s dogs have a public face. What about dead racing greyhounds who have died senselessly for greed and profit?

Here’s an interesting blog that is starting to put the story of dead racing greyhounds in people’s faces.

“At six and a half years of age, Amy Jo was still running for her life.

At six and a half years old, Amy Jo ran her 258th, and final race.

On January 22, 2005, this little red brindle girl severely fractured her left hock, and she was euthanized.

The injury report included the following description of the injury:
piece of bone protruding from leg

After hundreds of races, Amy Jo suffered a terrible, painful injury, and then she was killed.”

This is happening in the United States. We are a third-world country when it comes to greyhound racing standards.

Why are there no standards for how long a dog can run?

5 year old dog racing at Tucson Greyhound Park–raced 300 times

Subject: 5 year old dog racing at Tucson Greyhound Park – races 300 times

Question: How do you tell when a dog track is the end of the line?

Answer: When tired dogs are run and rerun who come in last over and over but are still racing for their lives.

One dog – AK’s Fruitcake – turned 5 on December 8, 2010 and will have raced 300 times as of tonight!

Is that a crime? It should be.

According to this KOLD-TV investigative segment , the GM of Tucson Greyhound Park said the dogs are treated well. They’re not treated so well that the GM would keep his pet there. If they were treated well, for starters these kennel operators would retire them.

In this recent article in the Arizona Daily Star, General Manager Tom Taylor says, “The dogs when they are on the track, in the kennel, they are taken care of wonderfully,” he said.  Running a 5+ year old dog 300 times is not our idea of wonderful.

Are there no NGA (National Greyhound Association), AGC (American Greyhound Council) or ADOR (Arizona Department of Racing) standards for greyhound welfare regarding age requirements?

Tucson Greyhound Park is no better that the third world country Guam when it comes to racing old dogs. (Correction: Guam is a U.S. territory but when the Guam dog track closed, dogs were just given away like kittens on the corner. Dogs raced into old age.)  At least the Guam lawmakers have come to their senses and voted to ban the cruel sport of greyhound racing on Guam again. Guam lawmakers trump Arizona lawmakers.

What you’re about to read was taken from Track Info website over a period of 14 days. As you can see these dogs are not winners and they can barely make it around the track and yet they are forced to race… for their lives.

Note: Unless specified, the regular race at TGP is 550 yards. The shorter race is 316 yards.

The above is just a sampling of animal cruelty.

What can you do about this blight of a race track in South Tucson?

1.      Print  this article or email the URL  your favorite news reporter or anchor person on TV and request they cover the story about greyhound racing injuries at Tucson Greyhound Park.

2.      Contact to your legislators and Governor Jan Brewer and tell them why live dog racing in Arizona must end.

3.      Schedule appointments with your legislators when they’re in Tucson and tell them face-to-face why live dog racing must end.

4.      Receive alerts from GREY2K USA about what’s happening and how you can get involved in helping to end greyhound racing in Pima County.

5.      Link this page to your Facebook and Twitter

Greyhound Racing: In memoriam of the Ebro dogs

There’s been much written about the racing greyhound starvation travesty in Florida.

Some times I have to step away and wear blinders and not watch TV, not check my email, and not surf the web for news which mostly seems bad these days.

There are some bright spots but not as many as I would like.

After reading numerous article about the Ebro dog track tragedy, I think I found the most heartfelt message yet.

Rather than post it here, I suggest you read the exact sentiment as it’s written.

Then hug your hound (or other dog breed) if you have one by your side.

Iowa greyhound racing must end now: Stop animal cruelty

Kudos to the GREY2K USA and ASPCA advocates  who are meeting with Iowa politicos to drive home the point that greyhound racing is cruel and must end.

Iowa is an enigma in my eyes – it’s progressive as Iowa is one of the few states allowing same sex marriage.

On the other hand, Iowa continues to demand dog racing even though it’s a fiscal drain on the state’s funds while sanctioning state dog abuse.

I always want to vomit when someone says, “If you compare dog racing to any other athletic activity, the number of injuries are astoundingly low, and greyhounds are doing what they love to do,” Hardison said.  Hardison is president of the Iowa Greyhound Association.

Mr. Hardison: What is the number of injuries to Iowa racing greyhounds? Greyhounds love to run but how do you know they love to race? If I was confined to a cramped cage for 19 to 21 hours a day, I would love to stretch my limbs and run around the yard too.

Mr. Hardison: Human athletes have the option of whether or not they want to participate. Racing greyhounds are captive slaves.

Here’s a well done article in the Des Moines Register. Thanks for the extensive coverage.

And best of all here’s a groundbreaking report about greyhound racing in Iowa.  As for injuries — 530 greyhound injuries were reported at Iowa tracks between January 2006 and August 2010.  57% of all reported injuries involved broken legs, and other reported injuries include puncture wounds, fractured skulls and paralysis.

Mr. Hardison: If you think this is “an astoundingly low” number of injuries, I’d like an explanation. Hypothetically, that’s more than 100 dogs a year suffering injuries and Iowa has seasonal tracks.

Iowa is one of the seven states where greyhounds still run for their lives. End greyhound racing in Iowa now!

Injured racing greyhounds from 2008 still racing 2010-Tucson

People ask me why I hate Tucson dog racing so much. Let me count the ways:

Below I am going to share with you some greyhounds who were injured, sick, or lame in 2008 but continue to race in 2010.

If this is not an example of greyhounds racing to their death — I don’t know what is.

BOC’s Woodrow – 122 races
This hound was injured Oct. 16, 2008 at Phoenix Greyhound Park (PGP). He suffered an injury to the right quarterbone. No treatment was provided. That  means we don’t know if treatment was or was not provided; that’s a wild card. Why it isn’t required to list if treatment is provided or not? I think these trainers shoot themselves in the head by not listing whether treatment was provided or not.

Boc’s Woodrow was again bumped two times on Sept. 19, 2008 and then he didn’t race for 5 months.

Unfortunately, he is still racing at TGP as of October 11, 2010, two years after suffering an injury to his quarterbone.

CDC Make Me Stop – 130 races
On Oct. 4, 2008 CDC Make Me Stop was bumped the first turn. On Oct. 10, 2008 the injury report listed CDC Make Me Stop as lame at PGP. If there was any treatment, none is listed.

Her most recent race is Oct. 9, 2010 and she’s on the schedule to race Oct. 13, 2010. Very sad.

Mississippi Mule – 136 races
MM was injured on Nov. 25, 2008. He suffered a dislocation to his right toe. No race was listed on Greyhound-Data but other racing industry information shows him running on that date.

MM’s most recent race was Oct. 6, 2010. Track info notes: “poor effort”. Why do you suppose that is? Could MM be tired of racing especially after having a dislocated toe?

(Note:  one full week without racing, not on schedule, uh oh)

PJs Lethal Chic – OMFG!  202 races (10/14/10)
Poor Chic has been racing since Nov. 1, 2007, almost 3 years. Chic was injured June 12, 2008 when she suffered a break to the left dewclaw. Chic most recently raced Oct. 11 and is scheduled to race Oct. 14. Why must a greyhound race every 3rd or 4th day?

Why must a hound who has raced for almost 3 years continue to race every 3rd or 4th day?

I adopted Chic’s littermate, PleaseSendMeaCheck. Unfortunately, he raced 150 times. I will pamper him until his dying day. I hope to high hell that Chic has the opportunity to find a soft bed and a loving household immediately if not sooner.

RLM’s Damage – 152 races
Damage was lame on Dec. 12, 2008 at PGP. If treatment was provided, it’s not listed. Why does the state veterinarian allow for such omissions on the injury reports? Why? It seems like greyhound welfare has never been high on the Arizona Department of Racing’s agenda.

Damage’s most recent race was Oct 9, 2010. He is scheduled to race again on Oct. 13, 2010.

RLM’s Divert – 170 races
Divert was sick at PGP on Nov. 19, 2008. No further info was provided. Sick can account for any number of things but keeping it vague is the order of the day, week, month, year. Divert most recently raced on Oct. 11, 2010.

Savvy Single – 188 races
Savvy’s first race was Dec. 6, 2007. On June 1, 2008, Savvy was lame at PGP. No further info was provided. Savvy’s most recent race was Oct. 11, 2010.

How many races does Savvy have to run before the hound either drops dead or goes to an adoption group?

AK’s Toureg – 136 races
AK was injured on Oct. 18, 2008 at TGP. She suffered swelling to her left hip. On Feb. 10, 2010, Toureg fell in the homestretch. Since then she has still raced 46 times in races that last approx 18 seconds vs. the longer 31 or 32 second races.

It seems obvious that Toureg cannot run the full race.

Nevertheless someone is giving her no choice but to continue to run and make money squeezing every drop of life from her limbs. Her most recent race was Oct. 12, 2010.

God help Toureg. I hope she crossed the finish line without any injuries and I hope her racing days are over and she races into an adopter’s heart.

You can find more info on Greyhound-Data (but it’s not up to date), on Track Info, and you can review the 2008 injury report and also find out how you can get involved in helping to end dog racing in South Tucson.

Greyhound racing slaughter in UK at Manchester’s Belle Vue dog track

I used to think the Brits were more civilized than the U.S. but after reading this report of six greyhounds  killed in one week in one dog track in the UK — I’ve changed my mind.

Thank you Tony Peters for telling the world about this horrific greyhound slaughter in the UK.

“A veteran greyhound racing enthusiast has vowed to “give up the game” after six greyhounds were “put down” following serious injuries at Manchester’s Belle Vue dog track in just over a week. ”

“The middle-aged man, who said he had raced dogs at the stadium for half his life, contacted greyhound protection group Greyhound Action on Sunday, after a two year old dog, called Ballyverry Rock, was “put down” after being badly injured in a race the previous evening.”

“The man, who asked for his name not to be divulged, said the dog’s death was “the final straw” for him, after witnessing five fatal injuries to greyhounds at Belle Vue the previous weekend.”

“Thousands of injuries to greyhounds, many of them serious, occur every year in Britain. The main reason for this is that the shape of the tracks, with fast straights leading into tight bends, creates a very dangerous environment for dogs to run in.

“In addition, hundreds of other greyhounds, bred because of the demand created by Belle Vue, are put to death as puppies or young dogs, before they even make it to the track, after being judged unsuitable for racing.

“According to recent research, more than 12,000 greyhounds, bred for the British racing industry, are ‘put down’ every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their ‘careers’ on the tracks come to an end.

“An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that ‘at least 20 greyhounds a day – either puppies which do not make the track, or retired dogs aged three or four – simply disappear, presumed killed’.

“Members of the public can help put an end to this horrific situation by not attending dog tracks or betting on greyhound racing, so this appalling death-industry fades away through lack of financial support.”

If you’ve got the stomach for it, you can read the article in its entirety here.

Greyhound Racing in Arizona: 81 dogs injured July

Phoenix Greyhound Park Injury List – July 2008

It’s a good thing that Phoenix Greyhound Park closed Dec. 19, 2009 and let’s hope and pray that it never reopens. Why?

According to injury reports which are a matter of public record, in July 2008, 81 dogs were injured, sick, or lame. Here’s the list. You can see it for yourself. The dogs’ names are bolded as are particularly striking comments written by track kennel operators, handlers, or trainers. Text in italics are blogger’s comments.

One of the many problems associated with Arizona greyhound racing is that dogs that are on the injury list 2008, go on to race and some are still racing in 2009 and 2010 at the other dog track in South Tucson. Another problem associated with Arizona greyhound racing is that this “sport” is supposed to be regulated by the state but very little  time and effort is placed on greyhound welfare. If it was, dogs wouldn’t be racing in 100+ degrees. It’s all about the money and the bettor, not greyhound welfare.

If I were the Arizona director of racing, the injury report would be completed in a cognizant manner not with minimal to no information. I would want to know why information was “not provided” so many times.  I’d want to clear up the discrepancies as to which side of the body the poor greyhound was injured. If greyhound welfare was of great importance to the state of Arizona, wouldn’t it be important to know why 5 dogs were injured or too sick or too lame on July 5? Someone really concerned about greyhound welfare would have the problem fixed by July 6.

As you can see, far too many dogs were injured July 2008 at Phoenix Greyhound Park.
