Greyhound Racing: Tucson dog 5 year 3 mos still racing last

Another few days have gone by and the poor dogs at Tucson Greyhound Park are still racing and coming in last, colliding, falling, and racing even though they can barely make it around the track. Are there no greyhound welfare standards in place in Arizona to ensure that a dog that is 5 years 3 mos old would not be racing 307 times?

Wednesday – March 16, 2011

MANY THANKS to the people watching the races and sharing this info with me (you know who you are). I don’t have the stomach to watch ongoing dog abuse.

Now, if you’re reading this and you are saying, “OMG HOW CAN THIS BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN?” — You need to act!  It is not getting better for the dogs. It is getting much, much worse.

Here is what you must do. Pick one or two or all 5 actions below and share this with everyone you know who wants dog racing to end in Tucson.

1.    Call Tucson Greyhound Park and express your outrage!
2.    Call Arizona Department of Racing and express your outrage!
3.    Call your council person. Contact your Arizona House of Representatives (you have 2) and your Arizona Senator.  (Please remember, they are obligated to listen to you)
4.    Contact GREY2K USA and find out how you can help on a local and national level.
5.    Please think twice before patronizing bars and restaurants that are off-track-betting (OTB) venues. Tucson dog track receives wagering money from these locations, which props up dog racing. There are lots of places in Tucson to eat & drink.  Please keep this in mind before supporting a venue which props up dog racing.

Say NO to Irish Greyhounds Going to China

Protest in Boston against sending Irish greyhounds to China

Speak out against Irish racing greyhounds going to China!

According to published reports, the Irish Greyhound Board is considering allying with Chinese officials to bring dog racing to the People’s Republic of China. Clearly, this expansion of a cruel industry would cause greyhounds to suffer even more, both in transport and then while racing. These gentle dogs would subsequently face uncertain futures in countries where animal welfare laws may not even exist and where dogs are on the menu.

Here is a disturbing photo of greyhound being sold at a meat market.

According to the American-European Greyhound Alliance (AEGA), Greyhounds in Ireland have been found mutilated, with ears cut off, drugged, hanged, drowned and killed by bolt gun in backstreet slaughterhouses. A minute percentage get homes here as will not be the case in China. Dogs in China are considered meat, many beaten brutally to tenderize their meat before they are often skinned alive.

Here’s the Irish Greyhound Board’s mission:
“The Board operates Tote facilities at all greyhound tracks in the Republic and applies an on-course levy on all bookmaker’s betting in the Republic. These levies together with gate receipts have funded the industry and allows the Board to:

•Supplement prize money at all levels of greyhound racing.
•Provide development loans and grants to greyhound tracks in order to enable them to improve their facilities.
•To advertise and market the industry on both a national and international level.
•Develop and improve greyhound stadiums nationwide.”

There is NO mention of greyhound welfare.

Please join with the animal welfare organizations like ARAN and Greyt Exploitations to send a strongly-worded letter to officials below. Let them know that the cruelty of dog racing should end, not be expanded.

SIGN THE PETITION TO SAVE IRISH GREYHOUNDS!

Mr. Simon Coveney, Minister of Agriculture

Mr. Barry Coleman, Welfare and Racing Operations Manager, Irish Greyhound Board

For a sample letter, click here.

Racing greyhounds in Arizona and six other U.S. states already suffer broken legs, broken hocks, electrocution, paralysis, and heart attacks, have disappeared in large numbers, and face euthanasia. And this is under “regulation.” Imagine a country without any animal welfare regulation.

I CRIED AFTER I WROTE THIS!

Does Arizona Department of Racing pay attention to any of this?  Why are dogs that have collided, fallen,  and jammed running again and what is happening to the dogs that have fallen, collided, and jammed? Why are dogs that are coming in 8th place still running for their lives? Show me some greyhound welfare standards!

You can verify the above info on Track Info.net, an official dog racing site that records ever little nuance except what happens to the dogs when we don’t see them running anymore.  How convenient is that? Greyhound-Data is also an official dog racing site which shows the dogs lineage and more.

VIDEO of greyhound racing injuries in Tucson

Arizona–between 2007 and 2009, 923 dogs were injured while racing in Arizona.

According to a hand-written injury report demonstrated in the video, Oxbow Savage (owner: Oregon Trail Kennel ) suffered a laceration where his brain was coming out.

Mercifully, there is only one dog track left in Arizona — Tucson Greyhound Park in scenic South Tucson. (Phoenix Greyhound Park closed Dec. 19, 2009.)

Please watch THIS VIDEO to be reminded that–

YES — the inhumane “sport” of dog racing exists in South Tucson

YES — dogs suffer and die

YES  — it’s still happening to our precious greyhounds like a nightmare that won’t go away

YES — you must get involved to help end greyhound racing; doing nothing is not an option

Please put this on Facebook and share with your friends. We live in a humane society. Greyhound racing is anything but.  Thank you

Mercifully, no dogs race on Sunday.

HB 2536 – the Arizona bill to lessen and hopefully phase out dog racing cannot come soon enough but is it too late for the above dogs?

Tucson greyhound racing updates – February 2011

Here is your monthly roundup somewhat later than usual about the poor, tired, injured dogs running for their lives at Tucson Greyhound Park. Again it’s not a “park” per se because parks are nice places.

Rather than have you link back to the previous months, I’ve just included all the info here and will continue to include it just to demonstrate the insanity of these dogs racing, racing, racing and not winning. You can see how these poor dogs are so ready to retire and are so used up.  They are just kept tethered to this cruel sport so some absentee dog owner can put gas in his or her tank.
There are 6 dogs still racing at TGP that were injured or lame in 2008. This just goes to show that the racing industry and those that are supposed to be monitoring it don’t care about greyhound welfare. This is the Mission Statement of the Arizona Department of Racing:

“To regulate and supervise para-mutuel racing conducted in Arizona in order to protect racing participants and the wagering public.  To regulate and supervise boxing and mixed martial arts events conducted in Arizona to protect all participants in those events.”

How much protecting of racing participants — the greyhounds — are they doing if dogs are still racing who were injured, sick, or lame in 2008?

ADOR’s salary budget is almost a quarter of a million dollars. Time to delete that state agency and roll it into the Department of Gaming. Maybe they will be better about protecting the lives of greyhounds.

Here are the dogs still racing from the 2008 injury report:

One year ago, on 2/06/10 she fell in homestretch; since that date, she’s raced 76 races – all short races. Enough animal abuse already!

Not all the dogs in this list are old but these dogs are tired; these dogs have fallen; these dogs have collided; these dogs have been jammed and faded (their words not mine).  Why must losers continue to race? Why? Why? Why? Because of selfish greed and lack of accountability.

Note: Unless specified, the regular race at TGP is 550 yards. The shorter race is 316 yards. If you have any of these dogs that I’m wondering about, email endtucsongreyhoundracing@yahoo.com and I will update this blog post.
