Partial list of injured Arizona racing greyhounds
Partial list of Arizona greyhound racing injuries first week of June 2008.
June 1 – four injuries in one night at Phoenix Greyhound Park
Bella Alexandria – lame, info not provided, raced until Oct 2009 (34 races), what happened to this dog? (owner: David Blair)
Bella Ionic – lame, info not provided, career-ending injury, MIA (owner: David Blair) This brindle female was the 2006 Tucson Night of Stars XVIII champ – BFD! Bella Ionic won 11 straight wins on 9/29/06, 10/4/06, 10/7/06, 10/13/06, 10/17/06, 10/21/06, 10/25/06, 10/30/06, 11/2/06, 11/11/06, and 11/16/06. On 10/25 the description says, “Just lsted, rail” – what the hell does that mean? Poor Bella Ionic, she raced 78 times. What happened to her?
Cedaran Camry – lame, info not provided, raced until 6/09, adopted through Ariz-Adopt-a-Greyhound rescue group
Savvy Single – lame, info not provided, almost 2 years after this injury- Savvy Single raced on May 27 at Tucson Greyhound Park. (owner: Gregory Wood)
June 4- Tucson Greyhound Park
Guan Jun – red male fawn, fracture, right tibia, EUTHANIZED (owner: Ten Anderson) Why are dogs euthanized? What’s wrong with dog racing? Why do greyhounds have to die? Would people stand for pugs to die this cruel way?
June 7 – Phoenix Greyhound Park
Miss Big Bucks – fracture, left leg, EUTHANIZED (owner: Russ McIhenny) according to greyhound-data the the last date was March 22, 2008 – Wrong! Who can trust this site when it’s wrong? What else is wrong with the racing industry?
Wildberry Luigid – fracture, right toes, career-ending, MIA (owner: Geo. Petropoulos)
This is frightening as the dog fell 2x – once on Feb 7 2008 and March 5 2008 but according to the injury report he was still running on June 7. Where is this hound?
You can search Greyhound-Data by entering the racing name of the dog and the country of origin. The information is not always up to date even though it’s a racing industry website.
One week in Arizona, partial list equals 7 dogs.
As if that’s not bad enough, here’s the really bad math:
2 greyhounds euthanized – gone, just like that – they really did run for their lives;
1 greyhound adopted – good for Camry;
and 4 greyhounds with whereabouts unknown.
Greyhound racing is an industry that depends on having NO ACCOUNTABILITY for its “inventory”.
It’s an industry that begs for tax breaks, begs to add other forms of gambling in order to be kept in business, while turning its head when the greyhounds’ fates come in to question.
Bad math. It’s happening daily, weekly, happening somewhere as I write this.
The END of greyhound racing is long overdue.
Thanks, blogger, for chipping away at it.
In the post above from June 7, 2010 wondering what happened to Bella Alexandria – She was adopted in March 2010 through the “Greyhound Adoption Center” in La Mesa and is now a member of our Family in Fresno, CA
