700+ Greyhounds Injured at Wheeling, WV Dog Track, 62 Dogs Die

Wheeling, WVa. – According to recently released state records, more than 700 greyhounds were reported injured at Wheeling Island Racetrack and Casino since 2008, and more than 1,000 dogs were prevented from racing because they were lame, injured, or because of illness.

“These terrible greyhound injuries are occurring every day at Wheeling Island,” said GREY2K USA Executive Director Carey Theil.  “Dogs are suffering broken legs and other serious injuries on a daily basis.”

In total, at least 707 greyhounds were reported injured at Wheeling between January 2008 and September 2009, according to state records provided by the West Virginia Racing Commission.  More than 100 of these injuries involved broken legs, and other reported injuries included dislocations, broken ankles, lacerations, fractured skulls and spinal injuries. Additionally, 62 dogs died or were euthanized during this period.

These reports also document individual dogs that suffered fatal injuries.  For example:

•    On July 1, 2009 a greyhound died after being hit by the mechanical lure and suffering head trauma and seizures.

•    On September 2, 2009 a dog was euthanized after suffering a spinal cord injury.

•    On September 4, 2009 a greyhound was euthanized after suffering a broken leg.  On the same day, another dog collapsed after a race and died.

In addition, state records indicate that 561 greyhounds were prevented from racing because of lameness or injury, and 576 greyhounds were prevented from racing because of illness.

“Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane and should end,” said Theil.  “Dogs play an important role in our lives, and deserve to be protected from individuals and industries that would do them harm.”

GREY2K USA is a national, non-profit greyhound protection organization with more than 25,000 supporters in all 50 states.

Blogger’s note: Another black eye for dog racing. What else is new?

Greyhound Racing Injuries – Arizona

Two years ago today – Jan. 26, 2008, two dogs were reported injured at Phoenix Greyhound Park.

UCME Just Lookin suffered a fracture of the right hock. The hock was wrapped and splinted. Recovery time not provided. According to greyhound-data, this dog ran 84 races from Jan 7, 2007 through Jan. 26, 2008 and came in first place 7 times.

  • What happened to this 60-pound red & white female?
  • How many times was she dosed with anabolic steroids to suppress estrus?

Also at Phoenix Greyhound Park, for RD’s Shaggy something happened to the dog’s rear legs but exactly what is not provided. Also not provided is the treatment or how long the recovery time would be. Comments included   “fell 1st turn – carried off track – both rear legs had a stilted walk, no fracture”

According to greyhound-data, he raced 58 times and continued to race until March 8, 2008 where he came in 2nd place but there was no comment and no mention of RD’s Shaggy on the injury list on that date.

  • Did this hound continue to run or did he retire?
  • What happened to RD’s Shaggy?
  • Who is RD?

Greyhound Racing Injuries – Arizona

On January 23, 2008, three dogs were injured at Tucson Greyhound Park.

Bayou Juliet suffered an abrasion to the left ear. The treatment was to cleanse the ear.

WW Night Owl suffered an abrasion to the left leg. The treatment was to wrap the leg and provide medication.

WW Outdoor suffered a swelling of the left carpals. No treatment was listed on the Veterinarian Injury Report so we don’t know whether the dog was treated or not, or how the dog was treated.

If you know what happened to WW Night Owl or WW Outdoor please inform at saveTucsongreyhounds@gmail.com

Greyhound Racing Injury – Jan. 20, 2008

One year ago on Jan. 20, 2008 at Phoenix Greyhound Park, the greyhound Mullroy was injured with a rupture to the left carpus. The treatment provided was a bandaid and Rimadyl.

The comment on the Arizona Department of Racing (ADOR) injury report was “dog hit fence” and “lots of blood.”

If this is your dog or if you were there or you saw it happen, please contact: savetucsongreyhounds@gmail.com for a confidential conversation.

You can view the injury report here.

Isolated fractures of the bones of the carpus (wrist) or tarsus (ankle) are not frequently encountered in veterinary medicine with the exception of racing greyhounds.

In greyhounds, the fractures of the individual bones in the carpus or tarsus occur as a result of the enormous stresses involved in running around a racetrack at high speeds.

These fractures are usually the result of trauma and often cause a severe lameness of the affected limb. The lameness may improve with time and rest.

R.I.P. AZ Racing Greyhounds – Jan. 2008

On the 2008 greyhound racing injury report, I noticed two dogs that died in January and never got to know the comfort of a forever home. These greyhounds died racing to their death.

Let’s remember them now:

At the Phoenix Greyhound Park on Jan. 9, 2008, racing greyhound RUMBLE suffered a right radius fracture and ulna. The treatment was euthanasia or PTD (put to death).

As with all fractures, fractures of the radius and ulna can also be classified as “simple” if each bone breaks into two pieces or “comminuted” if there are multiple pieces. Please see this website for additional reference.

On Jan. 15, 2008 at Tucson Greyhound Park, TNJ KAYKAY was euthanized. The report gives no information as to what kind of injury this dog suffered or where on the body the injury was. Information not provided.

TNJ KAYKAY ran 43 races in almost a year before she died. She missed her 3rd birthday by a month. Did somebody get rich of this dog?

If you can remember why TNJ KAYKAY died and want to talk about it, please contact savetucsongreyhounds@gmail.com

You too can look at your very own injury report which is available by contacting (ADOR) Arizona Department of Racing and completing a FOIA request.

Good News: Dairyland greyhound racing ended 12-31-09

Goodbye and good riddance. The last dog track in Wisconsin closed its doors.

Depending on what articles you have read, 350 to 900 dogs will need to be adopted or go elsewhere to race or back to the farm for breeding and dog knows what else.

Here are some articles about Dairyland and the mistreatment of the dogs. For you diehards out there who say, “Oh, but the dogs love to race.” Read these articles:

Four Dairyland dogs bleed to death.

Dogs may like to run but not on frozen tundra tracks. Thanks to the anonymous employees who spoke out!

A (PDF) history pockmarked by bad incidents.

The weather plays a role in injuries at Dairyland. The dogs are subjected to rain, wind, snow, sleet and very dry conditions.

There are more article, more tragedies, and many more abuses. Enough said for now.

My hope is that the majority of these dogs find loving forever homes and don’t have to race to their death at other tracks, aren’t disposed of, or sent to blood banks or laboratories to be used as medical experiments.

So which is the first dog track to close in 2010?
