I’m not especially uneducated and I try not to bicker. I am, however, somewhat conversant with what can happen when a race track closes. The one in Guam (yes, Guam. Central pacific: 8 hours west of Honolulu and 3 hours east of Tokyo) closed abruptly last November. Nearly 200 greyhounds were transformed overnight, from track management’s viewpoint from asset to liability. I’ll not go into great detail here about what followed, but you can read about it in an upcoming issue of ‘Dog World’ magazine. You can also find a wealth of information at any number websites. Just Google Guam greyhounds. In a nutshell, Guam humane society affiliate “Guam Animals in Need” (GAIN) has so far, with lots of help from greyhound advocates across the nation, saved more than 175 of those dogs. Nearly all now live in ‘forever’ homes from New York to California to Yuma Arizona to — yes — Canada and Alaska. One went to Hawaii and two to Japan. A few of the 151 we shipped to California and the East Coast remain with greyhound foster care facilities, and I have complete confidence that all will eventually be adopted into good homes.Two are with me now, awaiting clearance to make that 8,000 mile journey to better places. It wasn’t easy, but we’d do it again if need be. So please don’t try to convince me that ‘retired’ greyhounds can’t live in cold climates or can’t find good homes. I’ve personally seen what can be done with the right support and commitment. Let’s get the rest of those tracks closed. Dave Davis, GAIN volunteer in Guam.

Too bad some people do not have a heart – greyhounds are living, breathing miracles of God. Greyhounds DO NOT LIKE THE HEAT OR THE COLD so racing in awful high temperatures or in extreme cold temperatures is not what they want. Sorry to disagree with you Liz Fran but GREYHOUND RACING IS CRUEL & IT SUCKS – plain & simple. How would you want to be forced to run for your life, fed food not fit for comsumption & be forced to run in temperatures in the 100′s just so a few people can wager a bet. Get real – grow a heart – understand all a greyhound wants is to be loved – NOT ABUSED!!!! Sure a greyhound only races once every third day or so – THE REST OF THE TIME THEY LIVE IN CRATES only to be let go maybe every 6 hours to elimate than right back into that crate – BOY, THAT SURE SOUNDS LIKE A SUPER LIFE!!!! And for your informatioon NOT ALL GREYHOUNDS GET ADOPTED OUT – MOST ARE KILLED, even the puppies. Those greyhounds you see in loving homes are the few lucky ones – but in reality if a greyhound does not make his or her owner money he or she is disposed of quickly – THAT IS THE FACTS!!!!

This is indeed great news! This means several hundred greyhounds will no longer be exploited for some lame humans to watch and bet on. There are plenty of things you can bet on that don’t involve the misery of living things! Good riddance!

it is a sad day when all of you uneducated people get together and bicker. a very long time ago, egyptians were the people who bred greyhounds to guess what…??? RUN! thats right. and as far as the running goes, those dogs run for 30 SECONDS!!! who does not let their dog run in the park or in the yard, outside in the same heat? they run one race a night and they do not race everynight!!! dont be ignorant! those dogs are taken care of and adopted out. and they run for 30 seconds. so who ever thinks that is cruel, think about next time you let your dog run in the park when its 100 degrees out side, or leave your dog in the yard all day while you are not home……………get a life.
