Fire at Tucson Greyhound Park

On May 28, 2009, Tucson Greyhound Park’s historic dome caught on fire during the second race. Mercifully, the 80 to 90 dogs were all taken to safety but I wonder if they were checked for smoke inhalation?  That has not been reported on.  Nobody was hurt which is good. There were only 20 patrons and 30 employees on the premises. The South Tucson and Tucson fire departments had difficulty putting out the fire which was caused by faulty electrical.

Here’s a photo.

And in this article, the reporter made an error saying the kennels were air conditioned. Not! The media is never allowed in the back so there is no first-hand experience. If you read comments #48 and #49, a member of the Department of Racing task force says otherwise.

Kudos to the Arizona Daily Star for wondering how TGP can exist with only 20 patrons. They learned that the Tucson Greyhound Park makes their millions through off track betting. But what they failed to do is ask why TGP doesn’t pay any taxes to the state of Arizona on these millions of OTB dollars earned.

The last time they paid OTB taxes to the state was 1995-1996 and that was for $55,284. In the year 1994-1995, it was over $1 mil. Nothing has been paid to the State of Arizona since then by TGP for off track betting taxes. (See AZ Dept of Racing Audit Reports)

You’re facing a budget crisis and your elected officials are spinning out of control avoiding the issues. What’s with that?

Good News: Victory for Some Racing Greyhounds

With all the horrible and cruel news out there regarding greyhound racing, it does my heart good to read some promising news now and then.

–In Massachusetts the Greyhound Protection Act came under fire but the people and the dogs succeeded not the track. Dog racing still bites the dust in 2010 just like the voters wanted.

–New Hampshire’s House of Representatives passed a budget amendment requiring dog tracks to start paying the costs of their own regulation.* The tracks must either compensate the state one half million dollars a year, or suspend all live racing activities. The measure is now under consideration in the State Senate. Dog racing is a fiscal waste!

Also in New Hampshire, House Bill 630, which will make dog racing illegal, now continues its way through the legislative process. Go New Hampshire!

–Twin River, Rhode Island’s only dog track, announced that it will no longer race dogs at the facility after this summer. The same owners have already ended live racing in the state of Colorado! Hooray!

–Strides are being made in Florida too regarding including greyhounds under animal cruelty laws.

*The state of Arizona is still subsidizing dog racing because the dog tracks do not pay taxes on pari-mutuel earnings such as live handle racing or off-track-betting.

Government Subsidy and Greyhound Racing

It looks like Rhode Island’s politicians are much wiser and smarter than Arizona politicians.

Why?

Because the governor of Rhode Island took away the “upward to $10 million subsidy” to dog racing owners. Bravo.

Arizona taxpayers and students are not as lucky:

The Department of Racing is 85 percent financed by another state agency.

The greyhound race track in Tucson gets a hardship tax credit (because of declining income–do all you other Tucson businesses get that same perk?)

And Arizona racing greyhound breeders are rewarded mighty handsomely.

Meanwhile there are cuts in education and social services among other things.

I really think Arizona politicians have been out in the sun too long as they continue this free ride farce for the greyhound racing industry while raping education support on all levels.

But nobody seems to care. I used to think Arizona was a great place to live. I don’t anymore.

Horse Racing Cruelty: Preakness Horse Deaths

How many horses will be put down after they run to their death during the  Preakness? As I write that — it remains to be seen.

Here’s a really article by Suzana Megles. She compares horse racing to greyhound racing to dog sled racing.  In most cases, animals are exploited for greed and end up traumatized, injured or dead.

Did you know that three horses still died at the Kentucky Derby 2009 but not on camera like Eight Belles did last year. Read the article.

If you bet on the horses, I hope you lose.

Good News: Another Greyhound Race Track Closing

According to this AP story, Rhode Island greyhound racing is closing for the year.

I would think May through October is the season so the fact that it’s closing now is good news — a portent of things to come — nobody wants to watch or bet on the killer “sport” of dogs racing to their death.
